I’ve been writing this blog for a couple of months now and I have to admit that the biggest surprise for me has been the positive feedback I’ve received from a lot of my guy friends. I think it’s obvious that my target audience is women but I also think that it’s pretty cool that guys find my topics to be relevant to them too. And today’s post is dedicated to them.
I take most of my style tips for men from fashion expert Lloyd Boston’s book, Make Over Your Man: The Woman’s Guide to Dressing Any Man in Her Life. I like this book because it goes through all of the components of a man’s wardrobe in great detail. So what are the wardrobe basics for men? There are quite a few opinions on this topic, so here’s my compilation of the items that will create a strong foundation for any well-dressed man.
WARDROBE BASICS FOR MEN
Good underwear – I know this may sound like a no-brainer but I think a lot of guys have trouble throwing away underwear that has developed air vents. If your drawers are worn thin, buy new ones. And don’t be afraid to try different styles. Long gone are the days of “tighty whities” as the main choice of men’s underwear.
T-Shirts – If you’re in your late 20s, it’s time to start buying quality clothing. And t-shirts are no exception. Shirts with holes and tears just won’t do. Black and white are great colors to have but don’t be afraid to add red, blue, or any other color that compliments your skin tone.
Shirts – A white button-down shirt is essential to any wardrobe. Also consider adding another color (blue is very popular) or patterned shirt (like stripes and checks) for diversity.
Black sweater – You want a plain, black V-neck or crew neck sweater. Go for a quality fabric that can be worn for several years like cashmere or a cashmere blend.
Pants – Buy flat-front khakis and a pair of dressy, black pants. The flat-front style pant is often recommended because it’s flattering on most body types. Avoid pants with pleats unless you are a slim man looking to add bulk to your frame.
Jeans – There’s nothing like a man in a nice pair of jeans. Wait, what am I talking about? Oh yeah, what type of jeans should men buy. I think darker denim is a wonderful choice because it can be dressed up or down. Another key point to consider here is the importance of proper fit. I know a lot men like to wear their jeans baggy because they think it’s looks good. Let me be clear here, it doesn’t. Jeans that are too baggy actually make you look juvenile. Just buy jeans that are your actual pant size, not tight and not falling off your butt.
Sport coat/Blazer – A man who knows how to put on a t-shirt, blazer, and jeans is definitely a well-dressed man. Look for fabrics that can be worn for most of the year in a neutral color like gray, navy, brown, or black. And remember, if your jacket is too big it could look like you’re wearing your Dad’s sport coat. Not cool if you’re swinging your own mortgage.
Basic shoe – Buy a basic shoe, preferably in black if you can only get one good pair. Choose a style that can be dressed up or down like a loafer.
Wool coat – Find a classic style in a neutral color and you’ll have this item for many years.
Suit – If and when you can afford it, buy a classic suit that can be worn to work or to an evening event. The key is to pick a basic color so that the suit parts can be broken up and paired with other items, which creates limitless outfits. In his book, “Make Over Your Man,” Lloyd Boston recommends that men invest in a navy suit first since it’s the most versatile. But whatever suit you buy, please be aware that it will most likely need to be altered by a tailor. Many stores that sell men's suits have an in-house tailor so don't be afraid to use them.

Upgrade your man. Excellent topic! Now if you can only get the ladies to buy-in to the story, we'll be set.

Hey WBL! I'll do my part to spread the word. Most women want to help their man upgrade his look. But it's always hard for me to make suggestions because you don't want your man to think you're trying to change him into something he's not. Guys, let your woman know you're open for a little change. I'm sure she'll be happy to help! :o)

I have to say that this is very informative and enlightening to those of us who don't dress our men. I must brag proudly that my man, let's call him "B" has everything on this list and then some. He's rid himself over the last few years of worn drawers, an overly "hip hop" look being a 30-something, and instead has transitioned himself into a classy, well dressed, well kept man with a bit of a swagger in his step as of late. Thanks for the tips and I'll tell him that he's on top of it!

What a great topic! This was very informative, intuitive to most of us ladies (but not so much for the fellas). I must brag on my man! He has transitioned himself from the holey boxer brief wearing, too big denim hip-hop styling, bland clothes having man into a 2007 style icon in my opinion. Not only has he nailed everything on this list proudly, but he is now telling me what's fashionable for me to buy & wear. Have we created a metro-sexual monster? I think not. He's a real man, who now takes true pride in his appearance, recognizes the importance of dressing well and confidently and forces me to keep up with him. It doesn't help that other ladies are letting him know how good he looks either. I HAVE to keep up, to keep him! Thanks - Jen

Thanks Jen! I love to hear a woman appreciate her well-dressed man so much that it motivates her to upgrade her own look.

STYLEnosh Diva, our friend Shannon says that he stopped wearing white underwear, white socks, and white undershirts because he was mad that his laundry load of whites was always too small. So now, he just wears black underwear/garments to cut back on a load of washing. LOL! That's the laziest and craziest thing that I've ever heard.

HA! Novia, that is hilarious!! I guess one person's lazy is another person ingenuity!

Nice post! However I think accessories are also vital for men. A good quality briefcase makes a good suit look even smarter. With men needing to carry more everyday, a mens shoulder bag or briefcase is becoming essential. Invest in a quality, hardwearing one in a natural colour and you can't go wrong! My favourite is from here - http://www.maxwellscottbags.com and I love it!
