Men are visual creatures and I suppose the popular thong sandal doesn't offer much in the way of aesthetics. And while I understand the logic of men, is that an oxymoron, I was a little surprised by the flip-flop backlash from my male friends. I have one friend that doesn't even like you to be out in public with him if you're wearing the casual sandal! Now I do think us ladies can get a little carried away with these rubber shoes. Tackling a full day of shopping, it makes sense to wear a flat comfortable shoe. But wearing them on a date with your sweetie or even worse, wearing them to work, just doesn't make good fashion sense. I do, however, believe that not all flip-flops are created equal. I uncovered a cute and arguably sexy pair by Steve Madden at Zappos.com. If there are any guys out there with an opinion on women in flip-flops, we'd love to hear it!
Have you ever asked a guy his opinion about an outfit and you were wearing flip-flops? If so, did he stare at you with a complete look of disdain? In case you didn't get the memo, men, in general, really don't like us in flip-flops. I've heard comments like, "She looked great until you got down to her feet." Or, "Why do women keep wearing those things." The short answer is: because they're comfortable. Women get tired of maneuvering in heels. They really do kill the feet, fellas.

So you know I have to comment on this, I agree with most men because most women do no step out looking their best with flipflops...the "model":-) Has a gret pedi and the flops enchance her feet. Most women wear cheap versions, and note to flat-footed folks, just don't do it. Seriously. Gladiators and other sandal options look much better than your foot choking the life out of a poor flip-flop.
On the flip side can we discuss men with nasty feet wearing flip flops and/or sandals? Equally unappealing and so not pimpin.

Now you know I had to ring in on this one. There are 2 things I absolutely hate. 1. The toilet paper roll being put on backwards ( it should be facing so you can pull down from the front and not the back.) & 2. FLIP FLOPS! This is the worse shoe ever invented. How in the hell can you put on a fly outfit and then think just because your flip flops have rhinestones on them its OK to wear them? And even worse with a dress. It makes me want to scream! I tell you ladies I have walked pass several beautiful women that I may have been interested in JUST BECAUSE OF THE FLIP FLOPS! For you ladies who must wear this crappy piece of footwear, how about you do it in traffic at 5:00 on your nearest highway. Kill Yourself!

In my humble opinion as long as the feets are done and look edible, she can wear them joints wherever with me. I'm all about comfort so if sandals make you 'feel' comfortable and you feel even more comfortable 'round me in the Flip Flops it's only gonna make for a more comfortable situation later on.
Flip Flops? We talkin bout Flip Flops, right?

Great discussion everyone! I completely agree with Mo. I'm totally loving the gladiator sandal over the flip-flop. It just adds a little more polish. And men, please feel free to engage in a pedicure if you're planning to sport the toes in public. We don't like cruddy feet anymore than you do! lol
CHEESE, I get it. You HATE flip-flops. But why the violence? Can't we all just get along??
LMAO, at Patent Pending's comment. Hilarious!!!

I know that flip flops were invented primarily for the beach and being worn at home, but women just get so tired of wearing heels sometimes and to be honest, I wear flipflops if I know I'm going to be walking a great deal, and the place I'm going to is casual enough, like the mall. I don't know , it's just a matter of knowing what's comfortable for you, but of course, take into consideration the place and the dress code of the place. :)

While browsing at the local grocery store all of the food looks enticing. There are fresh greens, ripe fruits, and these strawberries have got my attention geared towards sharing these possibly after dinner and possibly in an ideal setting. Maybe it's the nice weather. Maybe it's because that cute flower shop girl seemed receptive to small talk. Then I hear it.
Smack... smack... is that the sound of someone chewing with their mouth open? Smack, smack, smack, smack... surely, this is 2008... someone's not beating their kid in the next aisle are they? Oh, it's sweaty feet sticking and slapping to some cheap plastic, rubber, or whatever the price of comfort costs.
It can't be too comforting to come in from the summer time weather and into the frozen food aisle. Stink carries and now the water element of her sweat has evaporated from her feet and just when I get to the frozen juice containers, I can't help to draw a comparison between the concentrate of the juice and her feet. I guess they say it's better to shop when you're not hungry, right?
In the checkout line you look down and notice all of the caveman toe knuckles, "show stealers" or the elongated second toe that has to be the longest of the foot, and all of the dirt they've accumulated in between the straps between their toes. I know feet are utilitarian and it's just a stop at the grocery store but then why put in the effort to wear that low cut top and that sun dress? I know it's a matter of taste but standing there waiting for checkout is when I decide to put the strawberries back. Sorry ladies, I've just lost my appetite.

Wow - such strong opinions about flip flops! I happen to love them, with my long second toes and all (that's for you, Bryan), but I try to keep my feet smooth and nice looking. I live in Florida and my feet need to breathe. My heels don't like straps, either - my feet want to be as free as possible! But my boyfriend hates them - mostly because of the sound they make. He calls them "slip slops." But he loves me anyway.

Well not all men hate flip flops!
Im from Angola, and I use sandals a lot, I even have a collection of Hawaianas from Brazil.
My boyfriend loves to see my toes showing... he says that... there should be a law forbidding me from using shoes!
Im short (1,58cm) and I like using heels, but daily he prefers me in flip flops/sandals/anything with a sole and very little foot covering, though he wouldn't mind if I walked around barefoot... actually he told me that feel inlove with me because of my feet!
A good pedicure, a moisturized skin, and some adornments like anklets and toe rings, must be taken in consideration before showing up in flipflops! I always get positive reviews when i use them.

I used to like to see the occasional rubber flip-flop but now that they're ubiquitous they've gotten tiresome. A backless thong in leather, even flat, remains tremendously sexy to me. Mostly as long as a woman's feet on well-kept any sandal will do nicely. I also disagree about the sound. Where from a flat thong and heeled or platform slide, the slip-slap of leather on bare sole is one of the sexiest sounds imaginable.

I haven't worn any in years, but if I did it was on the beach, or in the shower in the dorms. Why do men hate them? (I didn't know they did...) The same reason I do. They are gross, and worn in really inappropriate settings. Sorry if you can't put a pair of flats on for graduation or an indoor wedding, STAY HOME.
I don't even get the same emotion from bare feet.
Sophie said it great above: "Smack... smack... is that the sound of someone chewing with their mouth open? Smack, smack, smack, smack... surely, this is 2008... someone's not beating their kid in the next aisle are they? Oh, it's sweaty feet sticking and slapping to some cheap plastic, rubber, or whatever the price of comfort costs."
It's not the flip-flop, it's the insistence on wearing them everywhere possible and every f-in day. Comfort, I understand. Flip flops? I don't.

Feet are ugly to me. As a man I never wear flip flops except for in the shower at the gym. Women look cute in a clean low cut tennis shoe, but backless shoes with feet flopping up and down are gross. There are plenty of 1-2 inch heeled sandals women can wear if a higher heel is too uncomfortable to wear while doing a lot of walking.Flip flops just are not sexy, and nowadays wome are getting too sloppy and de-emphasizing being sexy.

i hate flip flops big time not to mention i don't like sandals or any of those other lazy slouch style shoes so many people but mostly women are always wearing these days. ladies, when you wear them- you really do look like a slouch from the trailer regardless of what else you are wearing with them, who is basically saying "hey y'all, i just got out of my trailer for the day and was too lazy to put on a real pair of shoes"
they are NOT comfortable. they are the ugliest foot related product EVER made. i hear women complain sometimes about heels hurting their feet. well, flip flops are bad for them too and your knees and back as well. plus it is pathetically all too common that i have heard women admit that they will try on some nice shoes they like and find a pair that fits but then ask for a 1/2 to full size smaller because they actually think they will look even better in those. and THEN they complain that their feet hurt..... hmm, i WONDER why?
accept your true shoe size and ditch those horrid, ugly flip flops!!

Call me a fetishist, but I find a girl in flip flop definitely sexy, so don't worry and get on wearing them !

Flip Flops are much more than style. They are a way of life. They tell others about the person you are. They can convey flirtyness, cashualness, etc. I am a man who has 15 pair. I don't have a foot fetish, I simply enjoy the ease and conformt they provide. I have also had several women say they love a man in toe thongs. As for them on a woman...they are fine. I actually have reservations about women who refuse to wear them regardless of how their feet look. Flips are the ultimate expression of one's personality. Preppy, Hippy, whatever your style...wearing flips are the best thing in life. Just my opinion. ...and I'm sure I am not alone

I quite like flip flops or pumps on a girl actually. I don't care for heels and to be frank with you high heels that make a girl walk differently are a major turn off. They make women look insecure like they the need to be taller or feel sexier. Why they want to look taller I don't understand since petite girls are better in my book than one's who are almost as tall as most men.

Flip flops should be only worn on the beach. I am amazed that women will spend 300 dollars on a nice outfit and then put on flip flops which just makes any woman look frumpy. It is just a lazy look and feet in general are gross. The most beautiful woman in the world will look frumpy with flip flops. If one of my employees wore flip flops to work, they would be fired

I have to agree with most everyone already posting that they dislike flip flops. I personally can't stand them either. I have listed the following reasons:
1. Feet are not an attractive part of anyone's body. Putting on toe rings, painting elaborate pictures on toe nails just make you look ridiculous.
2. Ever watch someone while their walking in a flip flop? Some people need seat belts (or I guess in this case) toe belts. The toes will fly up in the air as if gasping for breath in an invisible ocean with each step. This is so unattractive.
3. The flip flops get dirty. Looking down at a women wearing a flip flop and seeing that the shoe is black from filth and bacteria is really gross. Not to mention women constantly stand on one foot playing with them like their toys showing the world what dirty feet and shoes they have. Along those lines, if a dirty imprint of your foot remains on your flip flop when your foot is long removed its time to throw them away.
4. Women are wearing them far too often. Apparently is acceptable to wear them everywhere. Remember when the school children got to visit Pres. Bush? All the girls were wearing flip flops. How disrespectful, even if you don't like the man personally you should respect the position.
5. Women who have mangled toes (pointing in all directions even on top of eachother) should not be wearing these. I don't want to see that sorry but your feet should be covered. I was ordering some lunch at Burger King one day and saw a women with the worst case of toe nail fungus I had ever seen wearing flip flops. Truly disgusting.
6. They were intended for the beach and around the house. They were never intended to replace an actual shoe

They are trashy and very low class. Flops were very gross prior to 1995. Then "fashion World" made them valid and now they are everywhere. They are still gross and low class as far as I am concerned. But whatever right? Women can wear anything, look any kind of way. men are the ones locked in a box. But no matter, the fall of fashion, class and the hatred of and disenfranchisement men is all in keeping with the collapse of America.

Well i found totally sexy girls wearing sandals or flip flops! (Only if they take care of their feet of course) Specially greek sandals whoooaaaa! Very original! I am from Guatemala in a quite hot zone near to the Caribbean, so i wear them for coolness and comfort =) i used to hate saldals before, until the day i wear them.

Well i think this is a one sided article that does not consider the Faction of men with Foot Fetishes. These men, LOVE to see women in flip flops, and often would prefer to see women in flip flops; Then too, this is a very diverse group of people itself, made up of men who love women in any shoes, and especially No shoes; guys who appreciate the effort women go through to make their often more ignored body parts, stand out - For example, that's a Great picture you used for this article. Nice feet, her flip flops blend well with her skin, she 'almost' looks barefoot - it's great - nice legs on this woman as well; So much to appreciate when it comes to the Beauty in a woman, from the top of her head, to the soles of her feet!

I also remember the days when you could not wear open toed sandals in an upscale restaurant. And that was for good reason. The feet is the closest thing to the ground and has trillions of bacteria on them. No one really wants to sit next to someone in a restaurant with dirty feet!
I have seen many women sitting down in restaurants and they will lose their sandals or flip-flops. Sitting there totally barefoot! What about restaurant ethics?? Where did they go? What about the health codes? Totally gross.
Don't I have rights to be able to sit in a restaurant and eat without looking a dirty feet??
Sandals should not be permitted in hospitals, restaurants, doctor's ofc's. and churches.
I am totally shocked that hospitals will allow their employees to wear open toed shoes!
I live in the northeast and for many years we did not wear sandals and we lived through it. Personally, my feet feel better in a good tennis shoe than wearing a flat sandal all day.
Ever have a person step back on your exposed tooties? Hurts like hell and I lost a toenail because of it.
Open-toed shoes always came and went and I can't wait till they go away for another 20 years.

I'm a guy and I don't mind flip flops at all. It actually turns me off to see women struggle with a fantastic pair of heels because they're impossible to walk in. I don't like seeing people enslaved by fashion. I think it's important to have good fashion sense because it says you're putting enough thought and effort into being a part of society. Which means I also don't like over-the-top rebels who defy society for the sake of defying society. Most guys I know don't mind flip flops on girls. We just don't like it when they're not clean (dirt/sweat stains).

I don't mind if she feels comfortable and wear an anklet:)
Posted by: Daanish | January 12, 2009 at 06:08 PM
a nice sandal is fine, but flip flops should be worn only on the beach. I will never understand a woman who dresses in very nice upscale clothes, spends hours puting on makeup, and then puts on flip flops which to me exudes a frumpy lazy look. Might as well wear sweat pants out on the town if you are gonna put flip flops on.
Posted by: eric | March 25, 2009 at 11:31 PM
THe most attravtive part of female body I feel is the feet. If you dont keep your feet clean, you are never going to be attractive wheather you wear the most expensive pair of shoes or not. Flip flops are extreamly attractive to most men unlike what the author has mentioned. Several studies have shown that feet when exposed to the maximum gets the most attension of males. It can in many cases be better sexier than a high heal. If you watch the trend in the pronographic industry you would realize this. There is a gradual shift towards flip flop fetishism.
