I was talking to a friend of mine recently and I mentioned the cost of my handbag. I forgot why I brought it up (but trust me, it was relevant to the conversation) and he was slightly taken aback the pricetag. I then launch into my diatribe about why a good handbag is worth a few hundred bucks (it lasts forever and is a huge style boost for any outfit). And you may not realize it but, you actually save money because you're buying one fantastic bag versus four or five mediocre ones.
This conversation got me thinking, "How much is too much for a handbag." In my world, there's no such thing as spending too much on a handbag. Your style and your bank account should be the key factors in your answer. If you have any extra money to spend on your wardrobe, I believe it should be invested in your handbag (or shoes of course).
How much money have you spent on a handbag? And how much would you be willing to spend?

good info
thank-you

Seriously... If you spend more than 100-200 dollars on one hand bag that is enough. You get the quality. The major money spent on the hand bag is for the designer label. Consumerism, ego and money makes the woman is all abound here. Let's be smart and buy a less expensive bag (just as cute) and invest our money!! No, a hand bag is not an investment even if you say it is. I am talking about an IRA, stocks, etc. Having personal wealth is something to be proud of - not a hand bag collection.

I agree with Stella, personal wealth is definitely more important, especially with our economy the way it is. We all need money to exist. That said, I'm all for saving up to buy whatever your heart desires however much it may cost, whatever the materialistic goal. For me, once the basic needs are met, the bills paid etc, then I'll splurge on a handbag- but not one that has designer initials all over it.

Sheri, I appreciate your comments. And while I agree with you on the importance of investing our money so that we can have a comfortable future, I disagree with a few of your other assessments of this blog post. You stated that, "Consumerism, ego and money makes the woman is all abound here." I'm curious about how you drew that conclusion. I didn't utter one designer brand nor did I imply that a woman is less than if she doesn't carry a designer bag. The point I was presenting is that buying good quality will last well beyond the life of several poorer quality, often cheap, handbags. People get joy from a myriad of possibilities. Some building their personal wealth, others from things like travel or playing golf. And yes, even handbag collections can make some people smile. So for me, a good quality handbag or a fantastic pair of shoes is an investment- an investment in my wardrobe and consequently, an investment in me.

Carla, thanks for reminding us of the importance of saving for the things we want. Sometimes I feel like the word save has become a bad four-letter word in the U.S.
