Most people would rather wear their pajamas in public instead of donning several different prints at the same time. I like the creativity associated with pattern mixing. It feels freeing in a way. If you're sitting there shaking your head at the mere suggestion, there's an easy way to approach mixing it up.
Pick pieces that have the same colors in them.
In the pic shown here, the sweater has both black and brown in it. The shoes have brown with green accents. Adding the black tie-neck blouse and the khaki colored skirt works to bring the look together because they're neutral colors. This look is also an easy way to experiment with pattern mixing since the patterns aren't close to one another.
No one shows print combinations better than Lucky magazine. Check out their simple pattern mix here or their more daring version here. Don't worry about whether you're doing it right or not. I doubt you'll look like the old Ugly Betty. (She got a makeover in the season premiere last Friday!) The key is to keep trying new pattern combinations. Think of it as a creative adventure that begins in your closet.
