START THE WEEK IN FABULOUS FLATS!

After wearing this little number yesterday with high heels, my feet are begging for a comfy pair of flats. I'm going with one of my favorite Sigerson Morrison's from a million years ago. TOP 5 PIECES TO SURVIVE SUMMER : WEEKEND PICKS

Summer time brings beautifully long, casual days and sometimes unbearably hot sticky temps. In order to enjoy those days, you need easy pieces to wear that are cute of course, but also cool. Here are my top choices for what to wear on those hot summer weekends. I've had all five pieces in heavy rotation. 

1. Tennis skirt

I got this ingenious idea from my friend P. We were searching for those fantastic deals at Goodwill when she mentioned that she was planning to wear tennis skirts as a casual option for summer comfort. And she was spot on with this one. I've purchased three (3) tennis skirts (all from the thrift store for less than $2). Add a tank top or a soft tee and a easy pair of wedges and you're ready for shopping or your next barbecue.

2. Off-the-shoulder tops

I've mentioned this before but I love the look derived from the 80s movie Flashdance. In addition to leg-warmers (which I wear around the house for creative inspiration), I fancy the off-the-shoulder look. 

3. Wedges

From the inexpensive pair I'm wearing in the picture featured left, to the my favorite green, suede Sigerson Morrison beauties, wedges have become my shoe of choice during these hot summer days and nights. It's funny because last summer I was sick of wedges and now they've proven themselves indispensable. 

4. Skinny jeans

I know a lot of people who don't wear jeans in the summer time but I love them for evening. The sleekness of skinny jeans is perfect for a sexy night out. Just add a tank top or pretty blouse and heels and you're ready to roll!

 

5. Leopard print bag

Oh how I love my $13 leopard print tote from H&M. I love it so much that I've carried it relentlessly since I purchased it in April. Now it's practically in shreds. Good thing I snagged another one from one of my Goodwill runs for $4. But I still love the big print and style of my H&M original (shown right). You will be missed.

GOING OUT TONIGHT? PLEASE DON'T WEAR THIS

I saw at least two women in a 20 minute span wearing a similar legging/tight shirt ensemble. If you recall when this trend (that just won't die) started, people were opting for long shirts with their leggings. I don't know what happened but somehow people got the notion that it was no longer necessary to cover their butt. Do people believe that a shorter shirt allows you to dress up your comfortable, albiet tight, elastic waist stretch pants? Allow me to alter this rationale.

Adding heels to your leggings outfit does NOT mean you're dressed up and ready to hit the bar, party, or club. 

Unfortunately, this young lady looks like she slapped on a pair of heels with her workout clothes and said, "Let's roll!" Seriously.

This outfit is wrong for at least 95% of the female population over the age of 25. Your clothes are supposed to make you look better. And it's a shame that people are choosing to dress in a way that makes them look so much worse.

If you're going out this weekend and someone announces they're wearing an outfit like the one pictured here, stop them! And refer them to this blog. Oh, and have them read the blog post about festivals too. That logic can most definitely be applied to this situation as well.

 

 

A WORD ABOUT FESTIVALS....

It's mid April so that means it's officially festival season. You know those events typically held in your favorite local park with the requisite overpriced, greasy food and way too many people. Fun times, right? Let me give a few tips so your experience will be enjoyable for you and the people around you.

1  Leave the heels at home.

You never know what to expect at these mega park events. But one thing you can count on is a lot of walking. More than likely, you'll have to park your car and walk a bit just to get to the park. So your feet will be crying long before you reach that giant smoked turkey leg stand. Wear comfy flats and save your feet the agony.

2  Are daisy dukes really back in style?

In a short one word answer, no. Unless you have the body to make the look work. Then you can wear whatever you like. But cut-off shorts with butt and thigh parts spilling out in all directions is not attractive ladies. No, men don't find you sexy. No, you're not successfully claiming your big and beautiful body and making a statement. Yes, you are making a mockery of yourself. I know it's the weekend and you want to let it all to hang out but can you please hold some of it in? Please.

3  You can skip the funnel cake.  

You know you're old when you think the funnel cake will only cost $3. For those over 30, things have changed. Those fatty, sugary treats are $7 or more now. I can hear wallets wrenching in pain. The food smells delicious- that's how they draw you in. But instead of going into debt over festival food, just walk around park and enjoy the time with your friends. Then when you're ready to eat, go to a restaurant nearby for some real food without the crazy price gauging.

IT'S THE WEEKEND! PLEASE PUT AWAY THE KHAKIS

A lot of women struggle with what to wear to work every day. Am I professional enough? Or does this skirt scream "I was at the club last night" seems to be a common concern. But for another group of women, what to wear on the weekend can be a bigger issue. 

I have a friend who has had this problem since she started working over a decade ago. Her lament is that she always looks like she's heading to the office even when she's doing fun stuff on her own time like going to brunch or a basketball game. So how do you mix up your wardrobe so that you look more like Friday night and less like Monday morning?

There are plenty of ways to do away with the work wear on the weekend. For an easy approach, start with a perfectly relaxed pair of pants that aren't khaki, black, pinstripe or any other color/print that suggests you're on the way to the office.
